Our School History

As well as maintaining the current Milton Park Primary site, Mr Witts is our resident historian!

He has spent a great deal of time researching the history of the school and putting together the pieces of the puzzle

Milton Park Schools were originally separate infant and junior schools, built around the turn of the 20th century.

These are the plans to show when the now Acorn building was being designed.

At the time, it was built as an infant school.

These are the early plans for the development of the area around Milton Park Primary School. You'll notice Perth Road and Dunbar Road don't exist yet!

Additional land was purchased to increase the size of the grounds.

Before the junior school was opened in 1906, designs were drawn up for a new school in Eastney.

During World War II, Dunbar Road was heavily bombed. Lucky Milton Park was not affected!

Milton Park Primary School was built in 1906 and still has a number of it's Victorian style features today.  Originally opened as Milton First and Middle Schools, A.E.Cogswell designed the buildings using the distinctive red brick and roof tiles that are still visible today.

Mr Witts has managed to get sight of the original architect plans from when the school was build originally.

Thanks must go to the Portsmouth Library and Archive Service for allowing access to the drawings.

This is what we now know as the Acorn Building

This is the view from where the wooden steps currently are.

You'll notice that the lobby area isn't there no the ramp to the entrance.

This is the view from where the family hub is now.

This is what we now know as the Oak Building

This is the view of the Oak building from the playground.

You'll notice that there is no sports hall and the office area is smaller. These weren't added until 2012 and 2014.

This is the view of the Oak building from the railings alongside Eastney Road.

If you look very carefully when you walk past, you'll still see the 'BOYS' sign in the stone work!

According to the Portsmouth History Centre, Eastney Road School for Boys and Girls was opened in 1875 on the same site that Milton Park Primary School stands currently. Two years later, an 'infant department' was opened. Due to the rising pupil numbers (shown by the increase in housing in the maps above), it was enlarged in 1892, again on the same site. The schools were knocked down and rebuilt in the early 20th century.

Year R and 1 children are now based in the Acorn Building.

Years 2-6 are now based in the Oak Building.

In 2014, the school site was expanded. The Oak Building was extended to include a new sports hall, additional classrooms and toilet block.
